Recipients must also provide a final report explaining how the grant supported the project. The required images and prints become part of the W. Eugene Smith Legacy Collection at the International Center of Photography.

A limited number of fee waivers are distributed through partner organizations serving photographers in different regions and communities. Applicants unable to afford the fee can approach one of those participating organizations directly.
How to Enter
Applications are submitted online through Picter. Required materials include a biography of up to 1,500 characters, a project description of up to 2,000 characters and a more detailed proposal of up to 3,000 characters explaining how the funding would be used. A CV is optional.
Applicants may upload up to 40 JPG images. Files should be sRGB, 72 dpi and at least 1,500 pixels on the long side. For a new project, relevant previous photographs may be included when clearly identified as earlier work.
About the Jury
The Smith Fund appoints a three-member international jury, although individual names are not published.
Judging takes place in two stages. The first review considers the applications, proposals and photographs and identifies finalists based on the substantive and intellectual merits of their projects. Those photographers can then refine their proposals and respond to questions from the jury before a second session determines the grant recipients.
Why Enter The W. Eugene Smith Grant 2026?
The grant is unusual because the quality of the proposal matters alongside the photographs. A project can still be at an early stage, provided the applicant can demonstrate a convincing visual approach and a realistic plan for completing the work. Rules
Applicants must be at least 18 years old. International applications and collaborations are accepted, and applicants do not need to be professional photographers. Individuals may submit only one project proposal. Students are generally directed to the separate W. The grant must support the creation or completion of photographic work. Projects whose photography is already finished and only require editing, archiving, exhibition or book production are not eligible. AI or machine-learning-generated imagery is prohibited.
Copyright and Image Usage
The published 2026 terms do not explicitly state a general copyright-retention clause for all applicants. For grant recipients, however, the required Deed of Gift grants the Smith Fund and the International Center of Photography an irrevocable, worldwide, non-exclusive licence covering the images and prints supplied after receiving the grant.
Those materials may be exhibited and reproduced in print, electronic, film or other media for non-commercial purposes, including advertising, public relations, catalogues, books and similar publications relating to the Smith Fund or ICP.
