Contest Type

One deadline rarely tells the full story of the International Amateur Photographer of the Year 2026. The award is built around ten consecutive rounds, each with its own subject and submission window, beginning with Street on May 5, 2026, and concluding with Open on February 1, 2027. Photographers can approach it as a series, collecting points over the season, or enter only the themes that suit their work. Across the competition’s three tracks, the organizers list more than £24,000, or over $32,000, in prizes.

The program moves through urban observation, monochrome work, animals, colour, buildings, human subjects, outdoor views, close details, low-light images and a final unrestricted round. Each main-round winner receives software, retailer and book vouchers, and a photography education subscription. The two runners-up are also awarded prizes, while the top ten images are published in Amateur Photographer. Shortlisted and top-ten entries earn points, but only a photographer’s highest-placed image in each round contributes to the overall leaderboard.

Young APOY is not simply an age label added to the main ranking. It is a separate, free route for photographers aged 13 to 21, using the same ten themes and dates but offering four free entries per round, its own leaderboard and its own prizes. This gives younger image-makers a defined place in the programme and connects the award with Deartline’s coverage of free photography competitions. The season also belongs on a wider list of photography competitions, since entrants can select one deadline or plan a longer campaign.

Prizes

Prizes are awarded throughout the season, combining photography software and equipment-related rewards, education, vouchers and publication opportunities. Dollar amounts are approximate conversions.

  • Main round winner: DxO PhotoLab 8 and FilmPack 7, valued at £340, about $455; a £300 Park Cameras voucher, about $400; a School of Photography annual subscription valued at £120, about $160; and a £50 Bob Books voucher, about $67.
  • Main round second and third places: a DxO Nik Collection licence valued at £146, about $195, and a £25 Bob Books voucher, about $33, for each runner-up.
  • Main round top ten: publication in Amateur Photographer.
  • Overall APOY winner: the season title, a £1,000 Park Cameras voucher, about $1,338, and a £100 Bob Books voucher, about $134.
  • Young round winner: DxO PhotoLab and FilmPack licences valued at £340, about $455; a £100 Park Cameras voucher, about $134; a School of Photography subscription valued at £120, about $160; and a £50 Bob Books voucher, about $67.
  • Young round second and third places: the same runner-up package awarded in the main rounds.
  • Overall Young APOY winner: the season title, a £250 Park Cameras voucher, about $334, and a £100 Bob Books voucher, about $134.
  • Camera Club Award: a website build from Amazing Internet valued at £1,500, about $2,007, for the highest-scoring eligible UK club.

Categories or Themes

Nine defined subjects lead into an unrestricted final round, accommodating both specialists and photographers pursuing the overall title.

Young APOY 2026

Young APOY follows the main calendar but has a separate entry route and leaderboard. It is open to photographers aged 13 to 21, who must be 21 or younger on February 1, 2027. Entrants under 18 need permission from a parent or guardian.

Eligible photographers can submit up to four images free of charge in every round. They can enter one theme, return for several deadlines or build points across the complete season without buying a main APOY bundle. Young entrants may also enter the paid main competition, where standard charges apply, and the same photograph may be submitted to both routes.

Each round produces separate Young APOY results, prizes and points, followed by an overall youth title. For a photographer seeking a free to enter photo contest, this route offers repeated opportunities rather than a youth mention within the adult results.

Dates and Entry Fees

Every round closes before the next begins, so February 1, 2027, should not be treated as the deadline for all themes.

Main entries are bought as image credits and remain usable before midnight UTC+1 on February 1, 2027:

  • 1 image: £8, about $11.
  • 4 images: £24, about $32.
  • 12 images: £48, about $64.
  • 40 images: £100, about $134.

The main limit is five images per round. A code printed in eligible issues of Amateur Photographer provides one additional free entry for that round. Young APOY allows four free images per round.

How to Enter

Entries are managed through Photocrowd. The photographer signs into an account, selects the relevant round, chooses the main or Young APOY route and uploads the images before that theme’s deadline. Camera-club members seeking UK club points must identify their club and complete the organizer’s agreement process before entering their first image.

About the Jury

Each round is assessed separately by a panel of experienced judges. A shortlist is announced before the final placings, although the main overview does not identify one fixed jury for the entire season.

First place earns 100 points, followed by 90, 80, 70, 60, 50, 45, 40, 35 and 30 points through tenth place. Shortlisted work receives 10 points. Only each photographer’s highest result in a round contributes to the overall total.

Why Enter International Amateur Photographer of the Year 2026?

The format allows a choice between depth and variety. Someone with a strong animal image does not need a ten-part portfolio, while a participant seeking the overall title can plan across nine months. A later entry can still earn a round prize or magazine publication, even after the leaderboard has formed.

The scoring method rewards selection rather than volume alone. A larger bundle creates more submission opportunities, but only the best result from each photographer in a round counts. Entrants can reserve credits for their strongest subjects and keep less easily classified work for the final Open round.

Young APOY adds a genuine parallel route: no entry charge, separate results, recurring prizes and its own season title. The Camera Club Award gives UK members a collective target, while the publication of ten images from every main round adds an editorial outcome alongside the sponsor prizes.

When photographers compare the best photography competitions to enter, the headline prize is only one factor. Theme fit, the number of deadlines, the scoring method and the use of selected work also matter. Here, the ten-round calendar, published points system, distinct Young APOY pathway and recurring magazine selections make those practical details unusually visible.

Rules

  • The main award is for amateur photographers, defined as people for whom photography is a hobby rather than their primary income.
  • Entry is worldwide. Young APOY is for ages 13 to 21, with parental or guardian permission required for entrants under 18.
  • Images must be the entrant’s own work. AI-generated images are prohibited.
  • The same original image, including altered versions, may enter only one category. Eligible young photographers may submit the same photograph to both Young APOY and the main competition.
  • JPEG files at high quality are requested. RGB or sRGB and at least 2,500 pixels on the shortest side are recommended. Film scans are eligible.
  • Selected entrants may be asked for original files to authenticate their work.

Copyright remains with the photographer. Entry grants the promoter, sponsors and Photocrowd a non-exclusive, irrevocable license for competition-related uses, including print and online promotion, books, calendars or merchandise, exhibitions, press, marketing, social media and future competition promotion.
