Arnold Newman Prize for New Directions in Photographic Portraiture 2026 puts a substantial $20,000 unrestricted award behind one photographer with a distinctive approach to portraiture. Open to photographers aged 18 and over, the competition accepts a cohesive submission of up to 12 images and runs from August 19 to September 23, 2026. Three finalists each receive $500, while a wider Top Ten gains online presentation and inclusion in a professionally produced publication.
Entrants also submit an artist statement, biography, CV and a short explanation of how the award could advance their practice. The fee is $65 per submission, although a limited number of waivers are available through partner organizations for eligible applicants. For photographers comparing a current photography competition, the Arnold Newman Prize combines a major cash award with publication, exhibition and longer-term visibility for several photographers beyond the eventual winner.

- Prize recipient: Receives $20,000, with no restriction on how the money must be used.
- Three finalists: Each receives a $500 stipend.
- Top Ten: All ten selected photographers are featured in online galleries hosted by Maine Media and in a professionally produced publication dedicated to the 2026 award.
- Publication: Each Top Ten photographer receives complimentary copies. A limited hardcover edition will also be distributed to photography festivals, museum and university libraries, collectors and partner institutions.
- Exhibition: The winner and three finalists are presented through the prize’s exhibition partnership with the Griffin Museum of Photography.

Categories or Themes
There are no separate categories. The prize is devoted entirely to photographic portraiture and seeks a cohesive body of work demonstrating a strong, consistent and individual approach to the genre.
Submissions may originate in any photographic format before being entered electronically. The focus on an extended body of work makes the call particularly relevant to photographers exploring portrait photography competitions built around a series rather than individual images.

How to Enter
Applications are submitted exclusively through Café Entry. Each submission may contain up to 12 JPEG images, with 300 ppi recommended, approximately 1,200 pixels on the long edge and a maximum file size of 5 MB.
The application also requires an artist statement of up to 500 words, a short biography, a CV in PDF format and a brief statement describing how winning the prize would affect the photographer’s career goals.
About the Jury
The published 2026 jurors are Alexa Becker, Stephen Frailey and Elizabeth Krist. Their backgrounds span photobook publishing and consulting, photographic education, editing, curating and the wider international photography sector.
Every eligible submission is reviewed by the jurors: there is no preliminary jury screening. The panel selects a Top Ten and then chooses one prize recipient and three finalists from that group. Jury decisions are final.
Why Enter the Arnold Newman Prize?
The combination of a substantial unrestricted award and a portfolio-based judging format is central to the prize. The $20,000 does not have to fund a predefined project, giving the recipient flexibility in how it supports the next stage of their practice. At the same time, the jury considers up to 12 related photographs, allowing photographers to present a developed visual position rather than relying on one image.
The Arnold Newman Prize for New Directions in Photographic Portraiture 2026 publication adds another layer to the Top Ten selection, with copies reaching festivals, institutional libraries, collectors and partner organizations. For photographers considering the best photography competitions to enter, that combination of cash support, portrait-focused jury review, publication and exhibition makes the opportunity relevant well beyond the single $20,000 award.
Rules and Copyright
We reviewed the official rules of the Arnold Newman Prize for New Directions in Photographic Portraiture to summarize the key participation requirements, copyright terms and image usage conditions. Before entering, we recommend checking the complete rules published by the organizer.
Rules
Photographers of any level may enter if they are at least 18 years old, subject to geographic restrictions where the competition cannot legally operate. Current year-round Maine Media employees, board members and their immediate families are ineligible.
Each photograph must be original work created by the applicant. Previously published material may be submitted when the photographer still holds the rights required to grant Maine Media the necessary permission. For recognizable people, entrants must be prepared to provide a model release if requested, including authorization from a parent or guardian when the subject is a minor.
Copyright and Image Usage
Photographers retain all rights to their work and must own exclusive copyright in submitted images. Entry grants Maine Media permission to use the photographs for marketing and to display them on the Maine Media and Arnold Newman Archive websites, with attribution to the photographer.
Entrants must also be able to provide appropriate releases for recognizable subjects and, where applicable, copyrighted artworks or other protected material appearing in their photographs. The published terms do not specify a fixed duration for Maine Media’s image-use permission.
