Contest Type

The Rencontres d’Arles Discovery Award 2027, supported by the Louis Roederer Foundation, brings emerging photographic artists into one of the most established international photography festivals. The award works through galleries, art centers and other exhibition organizations that propose an artist and a complete exhibition project. Applications remain open until December 8, 2026, with selected projects scheduled for presentation at the 58th edition of Rencontres d’Arles in France.

Two awards totaling €20,000 in artwork acquisitions will recognize projects exhibited during the festival: a €15,000 Jury Award and a €5,000 Public Award. Selected projects also receive curatorial guidance, exhibition space and a €3,000 production budget. Participation is free, placing the award among the free photo contests featured on Deartline, although applications must be submitted by eligible organizations rather than individual photographers.

For 2027, invited curator Yining He introduces a perspective centered on how photographic images are produced, circulated and understood in a changing technological environment. Photographers exploring opportunities beyond a conventional online photo contest will find a different submission model here: institutional support, a developed exhibition proposal and participation in an international festival.

Contest Prizes

The Rencontres d’Arles Discovery Award 2027 combines two acquisition-based prizes with a supported exhibition program. The €20,000 total represents acquisitions of artworks rather than unrestricted cash payments.

  • Jury Award: €15,000. An expert jury appointed by Rencontres d’Arles selects a winning project during the festival’s opening week. The amount is allocated to acquiring artworks from the artist, with the artist and supporting organization recognized by the award. Acquired works enter the festival’s collection.
  • Public Award: €5,000. Festival visitors vote for their preferred project among the exhibited selections. The award also takes the form of an artwork acquisition, with the acquired works joining the Rencontres d’Arles collection.
  • Selected projects: Each receives approximately 50 m² of exhibition space, a €3,000 production budget and curatorial support. The festival covers exhibition design, installation, dismantling and insurance during the exhibition. It also provides the artist with two nights of accommodation during opening week and reimbursement of return travel to Arles.

The selected exhibitions will be presented from July to October 2027. These opportunities also connect the award with Deartline’s photography contests with exhibition prizes, although the application process differs from competitions that accept individual photographs.

Categories

The Rencontres d’Arles Discovery Award does not divide entries into separate photographic genres. Its focus is on recently discovered artistic work and exhibition projects that deserve wider international attention.

Proposals may approach photography through different visual languages and artistic practices. For 2027, Yining He’s curatorial statement examines the relationship between images, technological systems and contemporary forms of visual production. This provides a specific curatorial context without establishing compulsory subject categories.

Dates and Entry Fees

The application period runs from October to December 2026, followed by project selection and exhibition production in 2027.

How to Enter

Applications must be submitted online by an eligible exhibition organization. Each organization may propose one artist or one collective operating as a single artistic entity.

The application requires the organization’s profile and exhibition history, the artist’s biography, CV and portfolio, an exhibition proposal of up to 1,500 characters, a list of works, a scenographic simulation, a production budget using the official template and 10 project images. Written materials may be provided in French or English.

About the Jury

The Jury Award is decided by a panel of experts invited by Rencontres d’Arles. Its individual members have not yet been announced in the published 2027 call. The Public Award is determined separately through a vote by festival visitors.

The 2027 invited curator is Yining He, a researcher and exhibition curator working between China and the United Kingdom. Her practice examines photography in relation to technology, media ecology and contemporary art. She has curated more than 50 exhibitions across Eurasia, including projects associated with the Guangzhou Image Triennial, Singapore International Photography Festival and Beijing Photo Biennial.

Why Enter?

What distinguishes the Rencontres d’Arles Discovery Award 2027 is the relationship it creates between the artist, the presenting organization and the festival. Selection is not based on a single winning photograph but on an exhibition proposal developed with institutional support and curatorial involvement.

The €3,000 production allocation, dedicated exhibition space and practical support for artists make the selected projects part of a structured exhibition program. The acquisition awards introduce a further possibility for works to enter the Rencontres d’Arles collection.

This institutional model also creates an important eligibility distinction: photographers without a supporting exhibition organization cannot apply directly. For those already working with a gallery, art center or independent venue, however, the award provides a defined path from proposal to festival exhibition. That makes it relevant when researching the best photography competitions to enter, particularly for artists developing exhibition-based practices.

We reviewed the official rules of the Rencontres d’Arles Discovery Award 2027 to summarize the key participation requirements, copyright terms and image usage conditions. Before entering, we recommend checking the complete rules published by the organizer.

Only organizations whose activities center on exhibiting artists’ work may submit proposals. Each may present one artist or one collective. Selected artists and organizations must agree not to exhibit the proposed project, in whole or in part, before its presentation at Rencontres d’Arles 2027.

The presenting organization is responsible for producing exhibition-ready works, arranging their return transportation to Arles or Paris and insuring them during transit. The festival covers the exhibition-related services and support specified in its rules. Works not acquired through the awards are to be collected by the artist or organization after the exhibition.

The rules confirm that artworks purchased through the two awards become part of the Rencontres d’Arles collection. They do not expressly define copyright ownership, image licensing duration, promotional reproduction rights or sublicensing conditions. No specific policy regarding AI-generated imagery is stated.
