Handicrafts Photo Awards 2026

International Handicrafts Photo Awards 2026 turns the camera toward the knowledge, patience and human labour behind handmade objects. Organized by ESDER within an international Erasmus+ project, the competition is building a photographic record of traditional and contemporary craftsmanship from around the world. Entries close on August 31, 2026, and photographers aged 18 or over may submit up to ten images without paying an entry fee.

The brief reaches beyond finished artefacts. Photographs may show artisans at work, production techniques, workshops, tools, materials and the local settings in which craft traditions continue to develop. Prizes

The Handicrafts Photo Awards structure combines three monetary prizes with a substantial exhibition and publication selection.

• 106 Exhibition Awards: Each selected photograph receives a digital certificate and inclusion in the official catalogue and 3D virtual exhibition.
• All 109 selected photographs: The three prize winners and 106 exhibition selections will appear in a physical and digital catalogue published in Turkish and English.
• Gala presentation: Selected works will be displayed in the foyer during the international gala program in Ankara in October 2026. The virtual exhibition will also be presented during the event.

The catalogue will be distributed free of charge to institutions including universities, museums, cultural organizations, public bodies and NGOs. Categories or Themes

There are no separate categories. Every entry is judged within a single theme devoted to traditional and modern handicrafts.

Eligible subjects include artisans, handmade objects, production processes, workshops, tools, equipment and raw materials. The craft being practised should be clearly understandable in the photograph. Images may also explore qualities associated with craftsmanship, including labour, patience, ethics, originality, quality and local identity.

Dates and Entry Fees

Participation is available worldwide to anyone aged 18 or over, including entrants from recognized and unrecognized countries. Photographs that have previously entered other competitions or received awards remain eligible when no copyright restrictions prevent their submission. How to Enter

Applications must be completed through the form on the competition website. Each photograph should be uploaded as a JPEG file and named with the entrant’s first name, surname and an identifying number, following a format such as “Jackie.Chan.1”.

Files may be vertical or horizontal and can be submitted in color or monochrome. Watermarks, frames, signatures and logos are not permitted. Original or RAW files may be requested during the evaluation process.

About the Jury

Submissions first pass through a preliminary review by the Competition Organization Commission. Photographs that meet the eligibility and thematic requirements then proceed to jury evaluation.

The jury’s decisions are final. Substitute works will also be ranked so that another photograph can be selected if an eligibility or rights issue affects an awarded entry. Individual jury members are not identified in the competition information.

Rules

• Entrants must be at least 18 years old and may submit no more than ten photographs.

• JPEG files are required. Watermarks, borders, signatures and logos are prohibited.
• Artificial intelligence-generated images are not accepted.
• Reasonable color, sharpness and corrective adjustments are permitted, but editing must not excessively alter the original photograph or create an unfair advantage.
• Entrants must own the submitted work and obtain all permissions needed from artisans, identifiable people, venues and businesses shown in the photograph.

Copyright and Image Usage

The rights conditions for the 109 awarded and exhibition-selected works are extensive. Their financial rights, including adaptation, reproduction, distribution, public display, performance and communication to the public, are transferred to ESDER on an irrevocable, perpetual and worldwide basis.

ESDER may use those photographs in books, magazines, catalogues, calendars, posters, promotional products, physical and digital exhibitions, social media, broadcasts and online media. The works may also be shared with public institutions and civil organizations, and may be used for commercial or non-commercial purposes. No copyright fee or additional payment is provided beyond the stated competition award.

Selected photographers retain a defined freedom to use their images in personal and artistic portfolios, personal websites, social media accounts and non-commercial artistic exhibitions. Entrants should review this transfer of rights carefully before submitting.
