Contest Type

FotoDoc Photo Contest 2026 is aimed at documentary photography in its broadest sense: authorial work that helps readers understand contemporary life, social questions, and personal perspectives through images. For photographers comparing popular photography challenges, this call stands out for its rolling selection model, where approved works can be published online before the final awards stage.

The contest is organized by FotoDoc Festival and accepts Brazilian and international entries with no restriction on theme, approach, capture date, or previous publication history, except for works that have already won in earlier editions of the contest. Submissions close on June 30, 2026, and may be entered as a Single Image, Photo Essay, or Portfolio.

Initial submission and evaluation are free. If a work is selected by the curatorial team, publication on the FotoDoc website and Instagram requires a $29 publication fee, or R$ 98 for residents in Brazil. After the submission period ends, 60 finalists will be named, and 25 winners will be selected for exhibition at FotoDoc Festival 2026 in São Paulo. The Overall Winner receives the contest trophy, airfare and accommodation to attend the festival, and the opportunity to present the winning portfolio during FotoDoc Talks.

Prizes

The FotoDoc Photo Contest 2026 combines online publication, finalist recognition, catalog inclusion, festival exhibition, and an in-person opportunity for the Overall Winner.

  • Overall Winner: selected from the top three Portfolios. The winner receives the FotoDoc Photo Contest trophy, airfare and accommodation to attend FotoDoc Festival 2026 in São Paulo, and an invitation to present the portfolio during the festival’s “Encontros” talks.
  • 25 Winners: selected by a five-person professional jury meeting in person. Winning works will be included in a major exhibition at FotoDoc Festival 2026 in November, in São Paulo.
  • 60 Finalists: 9 Portfolios, 21 Photo Essays, and 30 Single Images. Finalists will be published in the FotoDoc Festival 2026 Catalog.
  • Selected Works: approved entries receive a dedicated photographer profile page, publication on the FotoDoc website, and promotion on the festival’s Instagram after payment of the publication fee.
  • All Submissions: every entry is reviewed by the curatorial team.

The contest includes both exhibition and publication opportunities, with the final stage connected to FotoDoc Festival in Brazil.

Categories or Themes

The contest has three submission categories, each designed for a different way of presenting documentary work.

  • Single Image: standalone photographs with strong impact. Each entry may include 1 to 3 images, although only one may be selected per entry.
  • Photo Essay: concise visual narratives built around a specific subject, submitted as a cohesive set of 6 to 8 images.
  • Portfolio: in-depth, long-term projects, submitted as a cohesive set of 10 to 15 images, preferably from a single project.

The call is especially relevant for photographers working with documentary, portfolios, social narratives, authorial essays, and contemporary visual research.

Dates and Entry Fees

The FotoDoc Photo Contest 2026 edition follows a rolling selection process, with entries reviewed and selected works published as they arrive.

About the Jury
