The Open competition seeks the world’s best single images, offering a $5,000 prize to its overall winner. Young photographers under 19 can compete in the Youth competition, while the Student competition provides a platform for those undertaking formal photography programs. Deadlines are staggered, starting with the Student competition closing on November 28, 2025, followed by the Youth and Open competitions on January 6, 2026, and finally the Professional competition on January 13, 2026. The objective of the Sony World Photography Awards extends beyond just accolades; it aims to establish a platform for the continuous development of photographic culture. It achieves this by recognizing great historical contributions through the Outstanding Contribution to Photography prize (details for which are typically announced separately) and by discovering and nurturing new talents, providing them with promotion and exhibition opportunities around the world. Sony’s commitment to this culture is evident in its ongoing relationships with individual winners, often extending beyond the awards ceremony to further develop their careers.
