Contest Type

Real And Wild – RAW Photography Awards 2026 is built around a sharp idea: nature photography does not have to begin with a plane ticket. Every image entered must be made within 100 km of the photographer’s home, turning local knowledge, patience, and repeated observation into the core of the competition. For photographers browsing photography challenges and contests, RAW offers a timely alternative to travel-led wildlife awards.

The competition is open worldwide and focuses on real nature, local territory, and ethical image-making. Its main categories cover wildlife, human-nature coexistence, people interacting with the natural world, macro subjects, and landscape or aerial perspectives. RAW Junior, a separate free division for photographers aged 17 and under, also follows the 100 km rule and allows up to five uploads. The main adult entry packages begin at $10, with bundles available for multiple images.

Entries close on September 30, 2026. Prizes include $1,000 for the overall RAW Photographer of the Year, $250 category awards, special titles for RAW Pet Photographer of the Year and RAW Junior Photographer of the Year, publication on the RAW Photography Awards website, recognition in the winners gallery, and planned opportunities connected to a physical exhibition and photobook.

Prizes

The RAW Photography Awards prize structure combines cash awards, category titles, publication, and additional recognition for shortlisted and commended images.

  • RAW Photographer of the Year: $1,000, awarded to the single strongest photograph submitted across all RAW categories.
  • RAW Gold: awarded to the top image in each main category, with $250 listed for each category winner.
  • RAW Amateur Gold: recognizes the strongest amateur image in each category. Amateur photographers can also win the overall category award.
  • Subcategory recognition: each subcategory may include a winner, along with Highly Commended and Commended photographs.
  • RAW Pet Photographer of the Year: a separate title for the best RAW Pets image. The cash amount is listed as to be determined.
  • RAW Junior Photographer of the Year: a separate award for photographers aged 17 and under. The junior award includes a medal but no cash prize.
  • Additional recognition: shortlisted and winning images are featured on rawpoty.com and promoted through Atlantic Geographic’s editorial network. A physical exhibition and photobook are planned, with details to be announced with the results.

The contest includes both cash prizes and publication opportunities for selected work.

Categories or Themes

RAW has five main adult categories, plus two independent awards.

  • RAW Neighbors: wildlife in habitats that appear free from human influence, including portraits, behavior, birds, and aquatic or marine life.
  • RAW Coexistence: wildlife within human environments, from backyards and balconies to infrastructure, streets, and fringe habitats.
  • RAW Connection: moments where people and nature intersect, including exploration, stewardship, conservation work, and visible relationships with the natural world.
  • RAW Macro: close-up work focused on overlooked details, including flora, minerals, insects, spiders, and small life.
  • RAW Perspective: landscapes, aerial views, panoramas, weather, atmosphere, and the visual character of the photographer’s 100 km territory.
  • RAW Pets: an independent competition for domesticated animals.
  • RAW Junior: a separate free competition for photographers aged 17 and under, with categories for wild neighbors, wild city, wild places, and wild moments.

The categories make RAW Photography Awards especially relevant to photographers interested in wildlife, nature photography, macro work, conservation storytelling, and local landscape photography.

Dates and Entry Fees

The RAW Photography Awards 2026 edition lists one closing date for submissions.

Adult entries are paid, with three package options available. RAW Junior is free for eligible photographers aged 17 and under.

  • Single Entry: $10 for one image.
  • Explorer Package: $25 for five images.
  • RAW Collection: $40 for ten images.
  • RAW Junior: free entry, with a maximum of five uploads.

RAW Junior also fits naturally among free photography competitions, although the adult competition uses paid entry packages.

How to Enter

Entries are submitted online through the competition’s entry platform. Photographers choose their package, declare amateur or professional status, pay if entering an adult category, define their 100 km territory, and upload their images. RAW Junior entrants select the junior option and do not need to provide payment details.

About the Jury

RAW Photography Awards uses blind judging, so judges see the image and subcategory, but not the photographer’s identity or professional status. The listed 2026 panel includes Rob Vamplew, Angelo Paletta, Wolfgang Schwan, Michelle Valberg, and Jacquie Matechuk, with one additional judge marked as to be announced.

The judging process includes anonymized submissions, technical review, longlist scoring, and final consensus selection. Criteria include impact, technical excellence, authenticity, and local connection.

Why Enter Real And Wild – RAW Photography Awards 2026?

RAW Photography Awards’s defining feature is its 100 km rule. Instead of rewarding access to rare destinations, the competition asks photographers to work from the territory they know best. That structure gives local ecosystems, familiar species, and repeated observation a central role in the final image.

For photographers comparing the best photography competitions, RAW offers a clear editorial identity: local nature, ethical practice, blind judging, and international participation. It may be particularly relevant for photographers working in conservation photography, urban nature, macro studies, aerial landscapes, and place-based storytelling.

The junior division also gives younger photographers a no-cost way to enter a structured international call. As a free to enter photo contest for photographers aged 17 and under, it keeps the same local-territory philosophy while separating junior work from adult categories.

This section about the rules and image rights of the Real And Wild – RAW Photography Awards 2026 has been generated automatically. If you are interested in participating in this contest we suggest you review the complete rules provided by the contest.

Rules

All images must be made within 100 km of the photographer’s declared primary residence, measured as a straight-line radius. Entrants declare this territory when submitting. Temporary travel locations, expedition bases, vacation properties, and workshop destinations are not acceptable as declared residences.

Images must be original work, submitted as JPEG files, and meet the required size specifications. Camera trap photographs are not eligible. Zoos, controlled wildlife environments, game farms, staged wildlife facilities, and baited workshop setups are excluded from the main categories. Standard adjustments are allowed, but HDR exposure blending, composites, adding or removing elements, artificial sky replacement, and AI-generated imagery are not permitted. Focus stacking is allowed only in RAW Macro and RAW Perspective, and panorama stitching only in RAW Perspective.

Photographers retain full copyright of their images. By entering, they grant RAW Photography Awards a non-exclusive license to reproduce submitted work for competition promotion, including use on rawpoty.com, social media, editorial features, and physical exhibition. This does not prevent photographers from selling or licensing their images elsewhere.
