The Royal Meteorological Society’s Weather Photographer of the Year 2024 competition is a prestigious international event that showcases the world’s most striking weather and climate photographs. Now in its ninth year, the competition provides an international platform to raise awareness about the environmental issues putting our planet at risk.

The competition boasts an array of categories, each with its own unique focus and rewarding prize. The coveted title of Standard Chartered Weather Photographer of the Year 2024 comes with a generous cash prize of £5,000, awarded for the most exceptional photograph that encapsulates the awe-inspiring beauty and formidable power of weather.

For the tech-savvy photographers who master the art of mobile photography, the Smartphone Weather Photographer of the Year category offers a cash prize of £2,500. Young shutterbugs under the age of 18 can vie for the title of Young Weather Photographer of the Year, which carries a cash prize of £750.

The Climate Award, with a prize of £1,000, seeks to highlight the pressing issue of climate change through compelling visual narratives.

The competition is open to all, free of charge, and encourages participation from individuals of varying skill levels. The 2024 competition commences on 15 April. The timeline unfolds as follows: entries are accepted from 15 April to 18 June, followed by a judging period from 19 June to 19 July. The public gets to cast their vote from 19 September to 17 October, culminating in the grand announcement of winners on 30 October.

Photographers can submit images taken between 18 June 2019 and 18 June 2024, with a maximum of five images per category.

In these Weather Photographer of the Year 2024 there is up to £9,250 up for grabs which will be distributed as follows:

Standard Chartered Weather Photographer of the Year

The Weather Photographer of the Year category offers a £5,000 cash prize to the best overall photograph showcasing the beauty and power of weather, open to photographers worldwide.

Standard Chartered Smartphone Weather Photographer of the Year

Smartphone Weather Photographer of the Year offers a cash prize of £2,500 to the winner, and is for photographs taken on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets.

Standard Chartered Young Weather Photographer of the Year

Young Weather Photographer of the Year offers a cash prize of £750 and is open to anyone under the age of 18 years old to submit their weather and climate-related photographs.

Standard Chartered Climate Award

The Climate Award offers a prize of £1,000 to the photograph that best tells a compelling story about climate change and its impacts. The winning photo will be selected from the three main categories of the competition and must contain a visual representation of weather and climate change.
